It’s been a short time since we lurked around the “affordable” used bicycle marketplace, but since we are now nearly locked down in the dead the winter it’s seemed like a worthwhile way way of wasting a few minutes out of our lives digging for the best deals in and around the metro area 

This is a 1980 Trek 710.  

1980 was the first year of production.  This is #41 of about 700 made that year.  It was hand-made in "The Barn" in Waterloo Wisconsin, before production shifted to a larger facility in 1982.  

The tubes are Reynolds 531.  

The 700c wheels are the original.  The drivetrain is the original Shimano 600 set; it works flawlessly. The brake calipers are also original Shimano 600.  The brake calipers are the original Shimano 600s.  

Not original:

 I have fitted new 32mm Bontrager tires (yes it can take 32mm!!!, I did not mistype 23mm) and this really improves the smoothness and handling.  Out of respect for how light this bike is,  fitted a new full-carbon Ergon saddle; on my scale, the bike is 22 lbs (9.98 kg) as pictured.  I fitted new Shimano brake levers and some mountain bike pads because I like bikes to stop as if they have disc brakes.  Finally, I fitted 46cm Soma Highway One bars, because they are more comfortable than the old Sakae bars.  HOWEVER, as you can see in the photos, I have all of the original stuff, including bars, brake levers, pedals, cages, leather cage straps, etc., and I will include it, or put it on the bike if you prefer.

The finish and condition are very good, with the usual scrapes that come with age, but there are no major faults and no dents.  I bought it over some vintage Bianchi models that I tested, because it is much better to ride, and more special to the brand.  I think the ride is so good partly because of the moderately slack head angle, and partly because of its ability to accept fairly wide tires.  

I think that you will not find a Trek at a higher trim level or in better condition, nor one with as much original equipment.  

If you are looking for an excellent Eroica bike, this is it.

Man if there is one thing i can say i am totally at ease with in the whole wide world of the cycling thing. Is the pure and simple fact i never had to be forced to ride bikes from this time period. Nothing against the nostalgia and all, and yes I can say have rode bike from this time period, but fuck i am soo glad i can climb on to something that doesn't feel like its made of gas pipe, pure and simple it doesn't matter if its a Colnago, Bridgestone, Raleigh, or Fuji they all feel the same. This is not even a hard pass...

2021 was the last year Santa Cruz made a Carbon Chameleon frame so don't sleep on it! 

Bike has very low miles and was just upgraded with brand new fork, AXS dropper and carbon handlebar.
