“The Library held a rededication ceremony for its newly refurbished statue of Abraham Lincoln in May at the Downtown Branch Library. Hundreds of students, including those from Lincoln Junior High in Pontiac and St. Hyacinth School in Detroit, were among those who responded to the “Save Abe” campaign initiated by Neal Shine, Senior Managing Editor of the Detroit Free Press. The restoration of the Lincoln statue symbolized to many the restoration of the entire Detroit Public Library system which began when Detroit voters approved a Library millage in August 1984.
