A picture for 1986! A picture that was probably taken is secret showing the prototype GN34 behind the Roush Racing facility in Livonia! 

In the late ’80s, Ford was developing the GN34, a 

mid-engine sports car intended to give the Corvette—and potentially much more exotic machinery—a serious problem. This red prototype wasn’t the final GN34, but an EXP-based engineering mule reportedly used to test the drivetrain and hardware. According to the period article, hiding behind that awkward EXP bodywork was a 3.0-liter Yamaha-designed engine based on the Formula 2 OX-66, supposedly capable of 250+ horsepower. In the 1980s, in something this small and mid-engined, that was no joke.

And this is where it gets painful: Ford never put the GN34 into production. Imagine an affordable, mid-engine Ford with Yamaha engineering arriving around 1989–1990. Would the Corvette, Porsche 944, or even the future NSX have had something to worry about?
