Until the Stratos Zero concept of 1970, Bertone had not worked with Lancia. Marcello Gandini’s wedge-shaped prototype won Bertone the commission to create a suitable rally replacement for the ageing Fulvia Coupé 1600 HF. The Turin Auto Show of 1971 saw the prototype Lancia Stratos HF that would come to dominate international rallying in the 1970s. The fluorescent red Stratos HF on show had no engine, as negotiations with Ferrari for the use of the Dino V6 were ongoing at the time.
