State of CX in MI is in real trouble!!! Get a grip people - not enough support or riders! Word on the street is that Robert is planning on droping the CX series in MI not enough $$$ to justify the effort! I love CX, but unless other clubs & shops step it up just say bye bye to CX in MI. - Born2CX
T hates pots stirr's, MAN if we pulled the plug on some aspect of our scene every time the turnouts are low ya'll would be doin disease rides by now., No dont git me wrong could be better, but so could of alotta aspects of your whole cycling sport in the scene. its wave, its gonna be ridin through highs and lows. some years are better than others. roll with it and cut the jibber jabber!

Average racer attendance for Lower Huron 105, attendance this past weekend over 140.
true, but there are so many other factors to consider, the economy in our SCENE isnt the greatest, jobs etc, has a influence turnouts, i highly doubt robert will kill the scene. Heck look at the mtb tt races some fields get 8 riders or less, think thats a worthwhile venture? his cross commitment is at best 3 1/2 month gig, there are ways to make it less costly for him. I agree we as a scene need to address some schedule issues, but killing it is a stretch.
just my 2 cents

if you want more stores to support the scene shop at them!!!!!
does the online store promote our scene?
I talked to Robert this weekend, he said he was having fun putting on cross races and had no intention of dropping them in 2009.
Could the scene be better? sure.
So go out and recruit some people to come race.
Bring your roadie or MTB friends out to watch or mix it up in the C field.
RIGHT ON.
How many times were you on and off the bike at Lower Huron? If you're looking to rope in more MTBers and Roadies, keep them on their bikes. The beach at Stoney was at least 2 years worth of "CX" for me.

Maybe if the stores had the selection and similar pricing we would shop at them.

3 times a lap. We get it, you didn't like running.
When I had to learn how to ride a bike when I was 3, I like, fell over a bunch, and, you know, it was, like, hard and stuff.
Welcome to 'CX. Supposed to fun, remember? New challenges?
We can set some cones up in the parking lot for you to ride around, if you want.

LOL!
thats funny!
Well the little kisscross race on the west side got well over 100 riders. No promotion, no purse, no pressure, no whining. But great courses, racers, and turnout.
Keep it simple - and fun, people will show up.

New challenges???!!! We can't even fill up the current challenges with enough challengers.
Next up, the Michigan Bicycle Polo Series. Weeeeee!
The parking lot at Lower Huron sure looked full up to me. What an awesome day.
CX is what it is. If you don't want to get off your bike, don't race CX. However, I can't tell you how many times the skills I've learned in CX have SAVE MY ASS in road racing. Not to brag, but racing CX has made me a much better bike handler which has translated to much better road and mtn bike racing.
To summarize, racing CX has saved my ASS, literally and figuratively. Seriously, I would have lost a lot of skin from my ass this season on the road if I didn't have the handling skills I learned in CX. :)
Where is the polo series?
alright folks heres the deal, details may vary..
im thinking of series, $10 to enter $350.00 to the winner/takes all cross like course, with dismounts of 3-4 per lap, sand, mud pits ala horse shit/pig shit. water crossing 1 at least, and a crazy flat paved section with dismount on concrete 3 barriers, but interrupted by logs. It gets really good here 1 rider different one each race gets to carry a weapon, could be a knife, small club, or a pellet pistol, this weapon can only be used on the competition. the race no matter the level will be 1 hr, you get shot or hit with whatever weapon the rider is carrying, your OUT!
sounds crazy but so did cross BITD, and 24hr mtb races. we could mi on the map.
1:03 anon:
"new challenges" meaning new to people who haven't raced 'CX before, and aren't used to the 'indignity' of running with the bike. For real though, when does Polo start? I just got a new grip put on the mallet . . .
Well I don't know where the polo series is but I know a great spot here in Clarkston for a game. I just need my Basso single speed put together. Anyone interested...we can get it going.
if this series is true, can i be the rider with the pellet gun?
One,maybe we need to move the races into some city parks where the local bike shop can promote it better.
Two more of the c's an B's should stick around a little longer and cheer on the masters and elite riders.
Three I am sure Robert could us alittle more help setting up and taking down the courses, It is always the same five or six people doing all the work.
man, thats a valid point!
yea the whole shop promting thing is a valid issue, i agree with #19 anon, a shop doesnt want to sponsor a event 20 mile sor so from there place of business. I think the Munson race is a prime example of a well suited venue, OK its only got a hill no pavement, but for a venue close to the sponsor, no cost to watch, (remember many are in a pay to enter parks) and not to mention a super friendly venue for the family to view the race. Its a great location, but too bad its the lowest attendence, why?? i can remember the state championship race there and the sponsor grilling dogs etc, for all to consume very cool! old agage is LOCATION, LOCATION LOCATION..
I love how you say, "if you don't like CX, then don't race it." Then I guess I'm one more person that could show up, but won't now. That's $35 less in Roberts pocket, and more motivation for Robert to cancel the series. Lets face it CX'ers, you need more poeple showing up or else Robert's not going to make enough money to keep the series going... and that's the bottom line.
Running across beaches does not help "grow" the sport. It didn't help that this "beach stunt" was so early in the season either. People have a bad taste in their mouths now. The Stoney course was a really bad move for the sport in MI this year.

How do you figure? go down to ohio and race there cross races! there locals are like short track mtb events, The thing i respect robert for is he has had a hand at the breeding of great MI crossers in the past few years, look at mike wissink weinert card, foshag, the old dogs joe brown just to name a few. all those mentioned when gooin outta state doin uci/crankbross/crossnats all have had some stellar rides. racing around EASY courses without conditions or courses like big race's only makes weak riders. If it was easy everyone would do it, IE road racing, MTB TT's etc, cross will ALWAYS be a fringe type sport here in our state because most like everything easy. suffereing NEVER feels good. you cant fake it out there. get over yourself and harden up, its NOT like your the only one runnin in the sand or having to turn your bike.

Sandy sections like the Stony beach of prominent features on many CX races, especially at the professional level. The beach has been part of that course since Tailwind has been using Baypoint at Stony.
Would you take l'Alple de Heuz out of the Tour de France cause the racers don't like it? How about paving all the cobble sections of Paris-Roubaix. Or closer to home, remove that woodchip hill that comes at the end of Iceman which most people have to get off and walk up!
The different terrain is all a part of bike racing.
Let's get off this "Robert might cancel the series" nonsense. Robert has never said anything remotely like that plus there has been nothing but growth in the series since he has started. I really don't understand the complaints about Stoney. Yes, the course had a lot of sand, yes there were a lot of turns. That is 'cross, some courses have no sand and are wide open with very little turns. Each race is a little different and part of what makes it hard is the fact that you have to find the parts of the course that suit you and then try to take it a little easier in parts that don't. It's like in road racing, if your not good at being in a 5 man break away with 50 miles to go your better off sitting in and hoping it will come back together, or if you have teammates working for you they close it down. It's all racing though so just come out and have fun.
dat my boy HIPPIE spread da love
crazy fooos!
I love it when a plan comes together...
