And I thought that the implosion of mountain biking in the U.S. was ugly. Please note that the USGP are the same group promoting Elite and Master's Worlds.

Breaking News: USGP Cyclocross Series Registration on Hold

Is the USGP cyclocross series potentially in jeopardy? The Exergy Cyclocross USGP race series registration for the opening Sun Prairie event has been put on hold after several delays, prompting racers trying to register to start asking questions. The cyclocross community has been buzzing all day trying to understand the potential implications, if any, on the series, their events and the 2012/2013 cyclocross race calendar. As of this morning, not only was registration for that race not opened, but no information on any USGP event could be found on BikeReg.

Cyclocross Magazine has learned that the USGP cyclocross series is considering its options about canceling the season’s races and suspending the series. Calls to Joan Hanscom, the Series Director, were not returned. The series’ title sponsor, Exergy, has recently faced financial trouble and has defaulted on cycling sponsorship payments.

The USGP cyclocross series has been the powerhouse of cyclocross in the US in recent years, pulling in top talent from across the country as well as European superstars like Bart Wellens. It has been the most prestigious American cyclocross series, and was the season goal of top American racers as well as Europeans like Raleigh-Clement’s Ben Berden.

There’s still hope that the series will continue. As of this morning, when asked why racers couldn’t pre-reg for the USGP and why the links on the USGP site to BikeReg were down, sources at BikeReg.com said the race registrations have been temporarily pushed back, but aren’t canceled as of yet. Promoters of the Sun Prairie GP said in an email that went out to the Madison Cyclocross Community, that the USGP is “working out logistical issues” and they have been assured that the issues “will be resolved very, very soon.”

We hope that the series is just experiencing a minor setback, and that the series will continue with healthy sponsorship. Of concern is whether the Louisville 2013 Cyclocross World Championships would be impacted as it is being promoted by the same group. Stay tuned for full coverage on the story as it develops.

I appreciate that you're holding to the dream, but...

The United States is at risk of losing its biggest national cyclocross series as organizers are scrambling to fill a last-minute sponsorship shortfall for the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross.

Series director Joan Hanscom told VeloNews on Tuesday that the USGP was facing cancelation because of a delay in sponsorship funds. Twenty-four hours later, however, a number of the series’ other sponsors had said that they would try to help cover the gap left by the shortfall, and Hanscom was hopeful that she could salvage the USGP.

“I began calling sponsors on Tuesday to notify them that the series would have to be canceled. I have been overwhelmed by reaction from our partners. While we have not closed the gap, we have a lot of great people trying to help us get there and save this USGP season.”

Exergy was to be the title sponsor of the seventh USGP series, as well as the 2013 elite world cyclocross championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The alternative energy firm has fallen on difficult financial times and is facing lawsuits from a number of parties, including vendors affiliated with the Exergy Tour in Boise, Idaho, and Virginia-based energy firm AES Corp.

Hanscom told VeloNews that her team was implementing a back-up plan and that Louisville was committed to hosting the worlds, set to take place in February.

“We have been working with the Louisville Sports Commission and USA Cycling to find a solution in case of a sponsorship shortfall. We are extremely fortunate to have such great partners.”

Sean Petty, chief operating officer at USA Cycling last week told VeloNews that he was working with the promoters to find a solution that would keep the world championships in the U.S.

“Exergy has committed to support USA Cycling and based on their previous history of meeting financial obligations to cycling teams and events we trust they will honor any outstanding commitments as soon as possible,” said Petty.

The 2012 U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross is scheduled for four weekends, with the Planet Bike Cup in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on September 22-23, the New Belgium Cup in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 13-14, the Derby City Cup in Louisville on November 10-11, and the Deschutes Brewery Cup in Bend, Oregon, on December 8-9.

The loss of the USGP is particularly troubling for a number of female riders, as Exergy’s pledged support made way for the series to offer equal prize money to top finishers in the men’s and women’s fields in 2011.

I hope that they can save the day, but the "big plunge" appears to be heading down without an out.

Alternative energy companies are a joke and Exergy will be filing for bankrupt shortly. Joe Biden was saying these types of companies would be paying $50/hr for basic laborers and new energy would renew the economy. Yeah, OK Joe...

Gee, do you think that the European X contingent (Riders, Teams, UCI, etc.) think that the BIG American X Scene is a f'in joke. Kind of embarrasing at this time.

Joan H is a hottie, but she better come good or her looks won't do her a damn bit of good in the Scene.
