Edwig Van Hooydonck.

He won the prestigious Tour of Flanders twice and Brabantse Pijl four times. He retired from professional cycling because he felt he could no longer compete with other cyclists, who were at the time starting to dope themselves, without himself cheating too. At this time EPO was becoming a widely used doping agent in the sport. A wonderful innovation in cycling credited to Van Hooydonk are three quarter length bibshorts or bib-knicks as we called them. Edwig aggravated a knee problem during the 1989 Tour of Flanders, so he had cycling shorts made that stretched below the knee, as an alternative to bandaging the knee. He was also known for using a smaller sized frame than ideal for his height. He inserted a spacer between his top cup and locking nut on the cup and cone headset so he continued to have a stiffer frame despite his size! He was tall and whippy. But didn’t want his frame to be!
