While payout is nice I think it is over emphasized. It has a weird captivating pull, but shouldn't be the determining factor in an amateur race. Now the $85 entry fee to ride on what is not a closed course is bonkers. Michigan spent too long in the era of Midwest cashteriums like Elk Grove and could certainly stand to have more low budget, low payout, low entry fee crits and races that are well run but for the spirit of racing. It certainly seems to work for the mid week race series we have.
85 bucks for an event isn't outrageous on it's face if it provides an epic experience. When I did dirty kanza it was right around 70 or 80 bucks which I didn't have a problem. You got some okay swag, a cool after-party and a whole day adventure. There really wasn't a payout but again it hits the other marks. Nue races are over a 100 bucks which again I don't have a problem for the above reason.
Anything over 45 bucks a race has to deliver. Barry is 65ish which is a bit steep but Rick shuts down an entire town for the day, has a good after party (although 1 free beer would be nice) and the payout is deep and actually posted ahead of time. Grit and gravel doesn't have a good payout, course isn't anything special, and doesn't have anything the required huge permits (ie shutting down Hastings Michigan)
I don't know, even Barry at $65, the majority of the course is open and loosely policed and the overlap between fields is scary as shit and has resulted in more than one bad crash.

Didn't race last year because of the reg, not racing this year because of the reg. The pricing is outrageous for the event.
Is there even payout this year? Not seeing anything. Even if there is, you basically have to win to break even. Sad trend with events like this
Completely agree. 85 bucks for a gravel race with a horrible payout is a joke.
