Every few years, a major media outlet claims it’s time to bring folk and blues singer Karen Dalton out of the shadows and into the light of celebrity, and every few years it doesn’t quite take. The obscure songstress is repeatedly cast as a crooner whose time has come, the ‘best singer you’ve never heard of.’ But in death as in life, Dalton seems to avoid at all costs the flattening effect of fame. It’s possible that her music retains its haunting grace in part because it’s not terribly accessible. Both supple and gravelly, and sad as hell, hers is the kind of sound that complements solitude and is best served with whiskey.” (Nina Renata Aron, Timeline, 2017)
