TOUR OF WASHTENAW ENTRY FEES REDUCED!
Pro/1/2 80 miles 1:50 PM $65
Apparently the economics of supply and demand have worked its magical formula and the greed of the MAN has been squelched for at least the short term. The question now is this. Are the riders that got "jacked" for $90 going to get their $25 bucks back? I hazard a guess that the answer is no, but I'll save my rant for when the decision has be set forth. I'll now bet that the field sizes begin to expand so that I can enjoy the beauty of attrition and the death that is mine only. Oh how the unprepared will suffer and the posers of Spring will now be separated from the true ethics of the wheel. "Enjoy" harlequins, "enjoy". I'll see you soon.

REAPER

Unless Paul Martin shows up, it will be Derek Graham.

From what I heard the other 4 guys in the winning P1/2 break at Cone just sucked Martin and Grahams wheels all day.

Interesting.

Does the Reaper dope? Does Kachelberry tell his barber "high and tight"? Does Johnny Cochran wear a knit cap?

check it out. entry fees reduced but now payout drastically reduced. combined categories plus reduced payout = net 85% reduction in payout for most categories. People who paid 90 are gonna be pissed

People who paid 90 will get a refund. Too bad the Michigan scene isn't good enough to support a race by a proven promoter. I'm sick of racing against the same jerseys week after week. The racers here are hardcore, but it's the same people year after year. I wish more people were willing to come into the mitten to race. At least IL,IN, OH, and WI aren't too far away.

1. Please let me know where you saw that any racer who paid the $90 will be refunded. I was one of those individuals and I have yet to see or receive confirmation of that fact.

2. Yes, some of the Michigan racers are "hard core". The problem is that the race courses are the "same 'ol, same 'ol" and most out of state racers are aware of that fact. This is why you don't see an in flux of visiting racers from the nearby region. The question is...why don't you travel to their states to test your skills on better courses with as good if not higher quality fields. As you've stated; Il, In, Oh, Ky, etc are not far away. Good luck and race hard.

Its pathetic, that a race of this caliber is getting the shake it is, All the "supposed" hard men, Future hard men, of our so-called scene should turn in the 2 card. Why is it no one has a problem paying a 20$ spot week after week for a AAVC spring for nothing race, or WWW or any other bullshit overpriced same lame ass loop around Kensington, But wont embrace something new.
Im from Michigan and it disgust me to see something that could be solid, go soft. TMS should change its name to The Softscene.

sick.

good points all. I must say when I went to sign up yesterday, then saw the combined fields and whacked payouts, I did not. I still may but that was a deterrent for sure.

I have to say we are a bit surprised.

We have 3 dirt road races in MI now. Barry-Roubaix being early, extremely hard, with great competition, and not exactly a road bike course. This race is growing huge for all fields and the top field attracts big regional talent without any real pay out. Imagine it with a decent purse. It isn't that TMS can't support a big race it is that this isn't a big race, at least not yet. Battenkill is cool and all but all their fighting with USAC and whining gets annoying. Don't bitch because the racers don't come to your race.

maybe I missed something, but what does that have to do with the lack of local support?

People have short memories.

People love to complain.

Complainers do nothing and tend to be bitter, negative people.

I see the same people complaining about the same thing year after year - "Why doesn't Willow have better payouts?", "Why does Frankenmuth charge so much extra for Day-of", "Why is it $45 to race a single event at Cherry-Roubaix". Same complainers - same complaints, never any initiative on their part.

A few years ago, maybe when I started racing in 2003 the gripe was that all the races were ofc park crits.

Then in 2009, when the season started with like 4 killer road races in a row, I actually heard someone complain "when are we gonna have a crit".

It's not same-ole-same-ole so shut that SHIT UP, you have no idea what you're talking about.

New races in 2011 alone -
ToW, Criterium Detroit City, West Michigan Stage Race, Make-A-Wish Road Race, Birmingham Criterium.

There are nearly 10 new races in the past 3 years, while old ones have gone. Remember the Midland course? Or Ada? Or Rockford? Or the K-Zoo 9th Ave Road Race (once the best in the state).

Michigan is surrounding by water on two sides and wilderness on one side, there's not going to be a lot of people coming to race in Michigan. Build the scene from within.

Things could have gone better for ToW. The promoter could have given it another year rather than rush it thru in 2011. Two "spring-classic" courses in a row may be trying peoples patience. Look at how the pros complained at the 2009 Tour when they added the Roubaix stage "we only need to race Roubaix once a year, that's enough" was the complaint.

Look at who has pre-registered. It's the racers who race day in and day out for years.

I can't say exactly how ToW will go or if it will return. I'd love to see it succeed and to have the promoters other races succeed and then Michigan has a race that's part of a successful national series. Time will tell.

thanks JOE,

you know how much respect TMS has for you.

if Washt had Joe promoting them they probably would have a lot more people signed up right now. It seemed real last minute. Hopefully it will be at least moderately successful and they will have a chance to do it right next year.

Anonymous said...

last minute wtf? JOE was spewing minute pieces months ago, and the fact is that the MBRA didn't promote it, only shows the lack of solid structure within the all for nothing series, why even have a point system. I hope someone isn't collecting any type of $ for calculating that shit.
the truth is everyone who had been pinning a # on in the last 6-8 weeks new it was coming.
TMS just doesn't like hard shit they would rather run around runway plaza or Waterford and pose.

Here are my thoughts on this whole ToW fiasco…..

- Hot-shot out of state promoter (Anthem) comes in and thinks that the Battenkill name and formula will automatically make for a (hack/cough/puke) EPIC MI race and big pay day for Anthem.

- Anthem fails to realize that up to $90 to race on dirt in the MI economy is way too much to ask. I don’t care how (hack/cough/puke) EPIC it is. Not to mention the outrageous late fees. Hell, include the cost of petro and it’s not worth it. You could pack up a few dudes this weekend, head to Indiana or Illinois, race and lodge for just about the same or less than it would cost to race ToW.

- So if ToW can reduce fee’s and payout’s and still cover the costs of running the event then where would have all the $$$$ gone if the original projected numbers have registered for the (hack/cough/puke) MIDWEST EPIC ?????? Hmmmm????? My guess is some bank in Cambridge, NY and not the MiScene.

- A third dirt road race is too much. At this point of the year people are sick of training and racing in shit weather, let alone on dirt. It’s too hard on equipment and bodies (ask Dan Lam), no matter how (hack/cough/puke) EPIC it is. When we start getting paid Pro-Tour appearance fees by promoters or the MBRA, then we can revisit.

- We have races that are part of the National calendars/series….UIV/IVBP 3-Day is part of the ATRA NCS Velodrome series, Grand Cycling Classic, and the (hack/cough/puke) EPIC Iceman on its own attracts a national elite field (somehow the Great Lakes haven’t stopped these racers)

- I’m all down for new races and new promoters, but there needs to be a better formula on the promoter’s part and the MBRA. I think people heard Battenkill, Anthem, national series, (hack/cough/puke) MIDWEST EPIC etc… and got all fired-up and big-eyed. Events need to have roots then grow (ala Iceman). Ultimately the biggest losers in the whole deal may be the town of Saline. I’m sure the shot callers were fed some nice warm corn bread during those initial meetings. I hope they don’t close the door on future events and opportunities (cycling or otherwise).

I promote road and mtb races, help manage a team, and pay to pin a number and race my bicycles. I have more the earned my right to express my (hack/cough/puke) EPIC SHIT.

race fees are out of control. you can't ask some noob to pony over that amount of money & expect the sport to grow.

race fees, are ridiculous, with little to no return, Ill just go ride my bike with my Buddie instead of paying to swing my dick around.
