Racing etiquette.

This is the part of racing where there are no USA Cycling rules, but there are certain things you do and don’t do.  Specifically, I want to touch on team tactics when there is a break up the road.  When I was coming through the ranks we would make fun of the Cat 3 riders that would have a guy 50 yards off the front with his teammates shoulder-to-shoulder across the road ‘blocking.’  This and other such nonsense seems to have moved to the Cat 1-2 field.

In last weekend’s Tour de Mount Pleasant (ed note: Truly exceptional event from start to finish.  Way to bounce back from last year!), a break of 11 riders was established around the halfway point.  All of the major teams were represented (3 Bissell, 2 Panther, 2 WAS Labs, 1 BMC, 1 Einstein, 1 Wolverine, 1 Priority), with the exception of Leadout.  Korienek put all of his riders on the front with a couple of independent riders mixed in.

Things were fine until a Bissell rider repeatedly got into the rotation to ‘block’ for his teammates in the break.  Maybe the racing is different in Holland and clearly they don’t teach that sort of thing at private schools in Boston, but that’s not how you race.  I was sitting farther back when a Lathrup rider went ballistic, called him out, a made some pretty dangerous moves.  He later said he was wrong and just frustrated at the time.

Two wrongs certainly don’t make a right, but the bottom line is that getting into the rotation during a chase or sending 15 guys to race putting 5 in a break and the blocking by linning the other 9 across the front of the group pretty low class...Yet is becoming par norm around Michigan psuedo pro teams all the way down.

Dont agree this is wrong? Look at the picture above from the 2013  Strade Bianche four riders are up the road from BMC, Katusha, IAM and Androni Giocattoli, Cannondale and Radioshack are chasing but the first rider IAM with a teammate in the break is 21st in line! Still dont agree see rule #43
 http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/

So there's your lesson for today..comments are encouraged but lets have a real discussion anonymous flaming doesn't serve or help us to improve or understand our sport or the Michigan racing scene.

"oh SNAP"????.....seriously?

Post of the year. Lemmy, Johnny Rotten, and Mr. T take notice.

I agree. this is what TMS should be!

Anonymous said...

i wonder who wrote this, TMS authors were not in the race. it's good to see some respectfully opinionated journalism. thanks for the contribution whoever you are.

OH BOY!

Bissell. Those guys never smile. Cheer up fellas and you could help (maybe) sell more vacuums.

Better question. "Who" is TMS?

Who Cares, its irrelevant. This post is what TMS should have more of. I would hope in the future maybe more of these could be part of it. TMS needs to have a contact for submitting posts.

what do you think TMS?

fully agree

Anonymous said...

Irrelevant? Not necessarily; but TMS should have a contact, I agree.

don't get off the subject.

a topic everyone seems to dodge, the terribly negative racing we have here.

Anonymous said...

mt. plesant wasn't very negative, in fact it was pretty aggressive all around. bissell is a bunch of weiners and panther races like men, no matter how many guys they have in the race

Anonymous said...

Bissell wasn't the only one guilty of this. One of the Einsteins was getting up to third wheel and then sitting up, opening gaps of several bike length every time and then sliding off the front forcing the riders working to close the gap. This was after the Bissell got yelled at and was out of the way. Apparently their desire to beat Bissell involves mimicking their every tactic.

When the shit is hitting the fan in a race and the break is "not established yet" it is okay to block and get in the way, but once it is established... get the fuck out of the way and enjoy yourself in the draft of the team that missed the break and is trying to close it down.

Michigan racing is amateur. Go to NCC races.

Finally TMS is posting something that is relevant to the sport instead of planting seeds for people to have a shit fest with and be ass clowns on here.

Anonymous said...

People can't help but be ass clowns on here as there are so many in the scene.

There's a reason Time Trials are called the "Race of Truth." The fastest guys wins... you don't have to deal with all the negative racing team BS.

I stopped reading the news paper long ago, as all the head lines of of murder, shootings, rape etc. It had me going down the same path.

MP was my final race as i can not help myself from mimicking all the ass clowns that frequent them with there over inflated pathetic ego's.

I drop dudes in a Nascar minute. and that's the facts.

If you came away from Mt. Pleasant with a bad vibe, you are the problem. You grumpy old shits that think a couple young guys excited to race their bikes are the worst thing to happen to the sport are what is wrong with the sport. Sure some guys made etiquette errors, but that was a well run race on a fun course with fast riders. I am sorry you aren't happy, I am sorry your life didn't turn out how you thought it would, I am sorry you aren't as good as you want to be, I am sorry you aren't better, but I am not sorry to see you go. Can you please take all the other CHODAGE, RODDAGE, and DOPAGE lovers along with you.

yes i would agree, great race, bad situation. Its been like that for years, its probably not gonna change. Nice post maybe it will at least make a few people think.
No hard feelings to anyone its a weekend warrior world and that's all it is. No one is collecting a check, just simple people doing a matter less activity in the whole scope of the world.

TT's don't prove anything except who spend the most time and money. Exceptions are there but the general rule holds true. As for mt pleasant no one was knocking the race. Everything in this post was true except one item was omitted: whether by accident or on purpose, someone pushed the same bissel rider out of the way prior to brolio's lapse in composure. The rider persisted at the front and as things escalated i felt little to no reason to speak up on his behalf despite chastising the first aggressor. Usac rules or not someone needed to speak up, and brolio did just that. I'll be the first to admit the negative racing trend just makes me care a little less every I encounter it. We can't change them, we just have to beat them. Which isn't hard as panther regularly demonstrates.

thanks Adam

Good luck beating them on MTB, but some are not true roadies.

It's sounds like some racers just want to line up 30 wide, no drafting and see who wins. I'm sorry but bike racing is about tactics and the best man may not win. if your looking for a medal for who is the strongest, go do a tri. Road racing requires strong legs and a strong mind. It is apparent what the haters lack. Stay near the front of a bike race, follow good wheels and success can be had. Join a good team of guys, work together and success can be had. Being a lone wolf with strong legs will get you no where here. Like I said, go do a tri. No drafting, no tactics, just train and race by yourself. That way we don't have to hear you.

I'm just doing PRO

Anonymous said...

id rather just sand bag
why make it harder than it needs to be?

Anonymous said...

I'm gonna race in the PRO category even though I'm gonna get dropped and should really be a Cat 3. i'm way to macho to downgrade tho.

Anonymous said...

It would be less wrong if there were an upward limit to the number of riders a team could put on the grid. "Blocking" isn't intrinsically wrong, but when the local "super team" (looking at you Roadhouse and you Marion) can put 15 riders on the grid, the races devolve into farce rather quickly. IMHO, Cat 1/2 races should have a maximum of 6 riders per team allowed. Just my take on things.

Anonymous said...

i would agree. good point thanks!

Blocking? In a road race with no turns? Just go around him.
